Dr. Marandola is a practicing orthopedic surgeon with over 30 years’ experience performing arthroscopic, reconstructive, joint preservation, and joint replacement surgery of the shoulder, hip and knee. He strives to educate his patients regarding their orthopedic conditions, provide them with conservative treatment options, and discuss surgical procedures in detail, allowing patients to make informed decisions to restore function and quality of life.

Dr. Marandola uses minimally invasive techniques to reduce pain and shorten recovery times. Most surgeries, including joint replacement, are performed in the outpatient setting with rapid rehabilitation protocols to accelerate recovery. He has proficiency with two robotic knee replacement systems and computer assisted shoulder replacement, and has extensive experience with direct anterior approach total hip replacement surgery. He has skill with a large variety of procedures including:

Knee: Robotic total and partial knee replacement, arthroscopic ACL reconstruction, meniscus repair, cartilage grafting and repair, patellofemoral realignment, tendon repair.

Hip: Total hip replacement utilizing the direct anterior approach, arthroscopic labral repair, endoscopic tendon repair, corrective surgery for impingement.

Shoulder: Reverse and anatomic shoulder replacement, arthroscopic rotator cuff repair, labral repair, stability surgery, decompression, biceps tendon repair, superior capsule reconstruction.

Dr. Marandola received his bachelor’s degree summa cum laude in biology with a minor in philosophy, earning Phi Beta Kappa honors from Boston University. He earned his medical degree from Boston University School of Medicine where he received Alpha Omega Alpha honors and was sole recipient of the Gross Anatomy Award. He completed a surgical internship and an orthopedic surgery residency at University of California, Irvine Medical Center. During his residency, Dr. Marandola earned two research awards, served as chairman of an international orthopedic meeting for the American Orthopedic Association, received extensive joint replacement training, and received sports medicine training at the Kerlan-Jobe Orthopedic Clinic in Los Angeles.

Dr. Marandola has trained orthopedic surgery residents for the UC Irvine School of Medicine as Clinical Professor, and as an Instructor for the Physician Assistant Program for the USC Keck School of Medicine. He is active in medical staff leadership and serves on the Joint Replacement and Orthopedic Executive Committees at Mission Hospital Regional Medical Center, where he also served as Chairman of the Department of Orthopedic Surgery, and served on numerous committees, including the Quality Management, Trauma, Surgery Executive, Utilization Review, and Interdisciplinary Practice Committees. He is a member of the Board of Managers at California Specialty Surgery Center. He has served on the Executive Board of the Orange County Chapter of the Western Orthopedic Association.

Dr. Marandola has served the South Orange County community by volunteering his time as team physician/orthopedist for Saddleback Valley Christian Schools, San Juan Hills High School, Aliso Niguel High School and Mission Viejo High School.

In his spare time, Dr. Marandola enjoys spending time with his wife and family, vacationing in the desert and at the beaches in his home state of Rhode Island. He also enjoys exercising, skiing and home improvement.

Michael S. Marandola, M.D. Receives Distinction as Distinguished Arthroscopy Leader

In the spring of 2019, the Arthroscopy Association of North America (AANA) announced the first class of Distinguished Arthroscopy Leaders (D.A.L.). The elite group is comprised of 21 accomplished Orthopedic Surgeons identified as leaders in arthroscopy through their education, research and achievements in the advancement of arthroscopy and dedication to improving patient outcomes.
